Pushpa 2 becomes highest-grossing Hindi film, beating Bollywood biggies

For almost 70 years, Hindi films used to be the highest earners at the Indian box office. From the time of Kismet to Dangal, Bollywood always had the top spot. Dubbed versions of Tamil films only did well if big stars like Kamal Haasan or Rajinikanth were in them. But even then, they couldn’t beat the popularity of Hindi films.
Things changed in 2017 when Baahubali 2 became a huge success in the Hindi market. After that, Shah Rukh Khan brought back the title with Jawan six years later. However, this didn’t last long. A new regional film, Pushpa 2: The Rule, came and broke all records.
Pushpa 2, the Hindi-dubbed version of the Telugu film, became the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time. It earned ₹812 crore net in India in the Hindi version alone. Trade experts say it made more than ₹1000 crore gross worldwide just in Hindi, out of its total ₹1742 crore collection. This helped Pushpa 2 beat Stree 2, which had made ₹598 crore in Hindi.
This is a huge achievement for Allu Arjun and a dubbed South Indian film. Pushpa 2 not only crossed Stree 2, but also defeated big Bollywood hits like Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan (₹582 crore), Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal (₹503 crore), Sunny Deol’s Gadar 2 (₹526 crore), Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava (₹586 crore), Aamir Khan’s Dangal (₹387 crore), Salman Khan’s Sultan (₹339 crore), and Akshay Kumar’s Good Newzz (₹205 crore).
One reason for this success is that Pushpa: The Rise had already become a hit in Hindi. The sequel had high expectations. This strategy had worked before with Baahubali 2 (₹511 crore in Hindi) and KGF Chapter 2 (₹435 crore in Hindi). Pushpa 2 followed this path but went even bigger, breaking all previous records.
