Air India Plane Crashes After Takeoff in Ahmedabad

An Air India aircraft crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Airport on Thursday. The Gujarat State Police Control Room confirmed the tragic incident.
Flight Details and Mayday Call
The aircraft, Air India Flight 171, was heading to London Gatwick. It departed from Runway 23 at 1:39 PM IST (08:09 UTC). Soon after takeoff, the pilots sent a mayday call to Air Traffic Control (ATC), but after that, there was no further communication. The plane crashed just outside the airport boundary. Thick black smoke was seen coming from the crash site, according to officials.
Casualties and Nationalities on Board
There were 230 people on board. Out of these:
- 169 were Indian nationals
- 53 were British nationals
- 7 were Portuguese nationals
- 1 was a Canadian national

Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran issued a statement expressing grief:
“With deep sorrow, I confirm that Air India Flight 171 met with a tragic accident today. Our heartfelt condolences go to the families and loved ones of all those affected by this unfortunate incident.”
