Adi Irani, famous for his role as Vicky Malhotra in the iconic 1993 film Baazigar alongside Shah Rukh Khan, recently opened up about his challenging experiences in the film industry during an interview with Filmytantra Media. He revealed that he was initially considered for a role in the star-studded film Dil Dhadakne Do, which features Anil Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Farhan Akhtar, and Shefali Shah. However, he later discovered that Parmeet Sethi was cast instead.
Adi Irani expressed his belief that director Zoya Akhtar prefers working with friends, sharing that he auditioned for the role but was not informed when the decision changed. He had hoped for a character with more significant scenes, explaining to Zoya that while he didn’t mind having fewer scenes, they needed to be meaningful. During the filming of Welcome Back, Anil Kapoor even asked him if he had secured the role, leading Irani to realize he was being sidelined.
When he was called for a second audition, he was surprised to find he was being considered for a different character entirely. Reflecting on this experience, Adi Irani noted that it wasn’t very professional for Zoya not to communicate the change. He understands how difficult it can be to inform an actor about such decisions but feels that honesty is often lacking in the industry.
Irani also shared his disappointment with the current state of filmmaking, suggesting that many directors and producers are more focused on profits than on creating emotionally resonant stories. He believes that the depth and emotional touch that once defined cinema are increasingly missing today.
