Imagine having to leave after coming this close to getting a part in the MCU. Isn’t it heartbreaking? With Black Widow in Iron Man 2, Emily Blunt had to deal with that. Eventually, Scarlett Johansson was cast in the part.
Blunt admitted that she was first in negotiations to play the feisty, ferocious Natasha Romanoff in an open discussion on The Howard Stern Show. The deal-breaker, however, was that a bothersome contractual requirement forced her to prioritize Gulliver’s Travels, a film she didn’t particularly want to shoot. Let the heartache begin. Blunt remarked, “I take such pride in the decisions that I make, so it was a bit of a heartbreaker for me.” Well, Robert Downey Jr. and Black Widow together?

Johansson ended up filling in instead. At first, Scarlett expressed her disappointment at not getting the role, telling People that she was “pretty bummed.” However, luck had a role. Johansson disclosed, “Then, unfortunately—a few weeks later—[the actor] who was initially cast in the role was unable to do it due to a scheduling conflict.” Now for the second-chance chance. “Yes, I’m still very available,” she continued.
