All Indian Film Workers Association (AICWA), a leading union in the Bollywood Film Industry, examined a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and emphasized the issues of daily wage workers.
In this communication on January 11, Suresh Suresh Gutta, the president of AICWA, talked about the important issues that workers, technicians, young artists, and artists are facing the Hindi Film Division.
The letter outlines serious grievances, including inadequate wages, excessively long working hours and inadequate safety measures on film sets.
He argues that these people are an integral part of India’s entertainment industry, which plays a vital role in the country’s economy and culture. Despite their immense contributions, they suffer exploitation, poor working conditions and a lack of social and economic security.
AICWA has called on the Prime Minister to address these pressing issues and insist on structural reforms that will improve worker welfare while strengthening the industry.
The letter notes that workers are often required to labor “16 to 20 hours a day without holidays, proper breaks, or rest,” leading to detrimental effects on their physical and mental well-being.
Founded in 2016, AICWA comprises daily wage earners, actors, stunt performers, and choreographers, boasting a membership of over one hundred thousand across India. The group also noted that film sets lack basic facilities such as fire safety and security measures, which leads to frequent accidents and deaths. Additionally, the food provided is often of poor quality, leading to health issues for workers.
The letter also expressed concerns about the facilities provided to female workers, highlighting a significant lack of changing rooms during outdoor shoots.
This situation forces female artists to change clothes in vehicles or in dangerous locations, compromising their dignity.
