Santosh’s Remarkable Achievement
Directed by Sandhya Suri, Santosh tells a powerful story set in rural North India. The film had its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, where it received critical acclaim for its storytelling and strong performances. Out of 85 films submitted globally, Santosh made it to the Oscars 2025 shortlist, representing the UK.
Shahana Goswami, who stars in the film, shared her joy on Instagram, saying, “I’m so happy for the team, especially our writer-director Sandhya Suri, for this moment of recognition for Santosh! It’s amazing to be shortlisted from 85 films. Thank you to everyone who supported and voted for it.”
Storyline and Critical Praise
The film follows a determined young Hindu widow (played by Shahana Goswami), who takes on her late husband’s job as a police constable through a government program. As she adapts to her new role, she uncovers corruption in the system while investigating a brutal murder of a Dalit teenage girl. She is assisted by veteran detective Inspector Sharma, played by Sunita Rajwar.
Critics have praised Santosh for its insightful look into caste, gender, and systemic issues in rural India. Shahana Goswami’s powerful performance has been highlighted, making the film a strong contender in the Oscars 2025 race.
