Dhanush to Play Dr APJ Abdul Kalam in Upcoming Biopic ‘Kalam’
Actor Dhanush has been chosen to play the lead role in the biopic of Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The film is titled Kalam and was officially launched at the 78th Cannes Film Festival.
On Wednesday, May 21, Dhanush shared the first-look poster of the film on Instagram. The poster shows the silhouettes of two figures with a missile flying upwards between them, leaving a smoke trail. Dhanush wrote, “I feel truly blessed and deeply humbled to be portraying the life of such an inspirational and magnanimous leader — our very own Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, sir.”
Dr Kalam was the 11th President of India and was known as the ‘Missile Man of India’. He rose from a humble background to become a respected aerospace scientist and national hero. People also lovingly called him the ‘People’s President’.
The film Kalam will be directed by Om Raut, who is known for Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior and Adipurush. It is produced by Abhishek Agarwal and Bhushan Kumar under Abhishek Agarwal Arts and T-Series. The screenplay is written by Saiwyn Quadras, who earlier worked on famous biopics like Neerja, Maidaan, and Parmanu: The Story of Pokhran. The makers said the film will show Dr Kalam’s life journey — from his early days in Rameswaram to becoming the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan. It will highlight how his creative mind, leadership, and vision inspired millions. The movie will not only focus on his achievements in science and politics, but also show him as a teacher, poet, and a humble human being.
Director Om Raut said, “In today’s world where true leaders are rare, Kalam sir was a man above politics and ego. He stood for education, innovation, and excellence. Making this film is both a creative challenge and a great responsibility. His story is powerful and will inspire youth across the globe, especially in the Global South. This is the most meaningful project of my life.”
Producer Abhishek Agarwal also shared his happiness about working with Dhanush and the team. He said, “It’s an honour to bring the story of our Bharat Ratna Kalam ji to the screen. We are giving our best to make this one of the grandest films in Indian cinema.”
Bhushan Kumar from T-Series said, “This is our third project with director Om Raut. Working with Dhanush and Abhishek Agarwal makes this film even more special. This is not just a movie — it’s a tribute to a great man who showed us how dreams, hard work, and humility can build a better future for our country.”
The release date of Kalam has not been announced yet. The rest of the cast and crew are also yet to be revealed.
